Quick reference — Inorganic nomenclature

  • Oxides: metal + oxygen → oxide (specify oxidation state when needed, e.g., iron(III) oxide).
  • Hydrides: metal + hydrogen → hydride (e.g., sodium hydride NaH).
  • Hydroxides: metal + OH → hydroxide (e.g., sodium hydroxide NaOH).
  • Oxoacids: general formula HₓEOᵧ — name as the oxoacid of E with -ic/-ous endings depending on oxidation state (e.g., H₂SO₄ sulfuric acid).
  • Oxosalts: salts derived from oxoacids (metal + oxoanion, e.g., Na₂SO₄ sodium sulfate).
